Guy Fawkes Night

Hey Guys~ Some of you have heard me going on about fireworks for the past couple of days, and so some will know it's Guy Fawkes night here in Iggyland~ (I prefer calling it Bonfire Night >:u) Considering I'm pretty much the last Brit in the group, I feel the need to teach you all our ways.
For those of you who might not know much about it, here take some facts~ .u.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The basis behind the holiday is in 1605, Guy Fawkes who was a member of the Gunpowder plot(A plot to kill the King of England/Scotland by blowing up the House of Lords, Because of religious stuff and etcetc.) was the one out of the many plotters who was in charge of the explosives. However because of an anonymous letter, a search was started and Guy Fawkes was found under the building with 36 barrels of gunpowder on November 4th. He was arrested and the other plotters fled(Several of them were captured, and were to be Hung, Drawn and Quartered, but Guy jumped off the stand which he would be hung from, breaking his neck so he wouldn't suffer the execution). Because the king had survived people around London lit Bonfires to celebrate his survival, and soon later it became an official holiday.
Of course nowadays people do more than just light Bonfires, although that is the basis of it all.

Other things~:
  1. People sometimes put effigies, burnable "statues" If I could call it that which are made of straw and old clothes, of Guy Fawkes, and even sometimes the Pope or Politicians on Bonfires.
  2. Fireworks. /Lots/ and lots of fireworks. For about the week before Bonfire night, and even more on the night, you regularly see and hear fireworks being set off. At least 1 in 10 households light one or some of their own fireworks, and some people go to watch big public fireworks shows. Can't forget Sparklers too.
  3. Toffee/Caramel apples on sticks, nomnomnom. I think I have one left over at my house. Ishouldgostealit.
  4. Traditions of kids going around with an effigy of 'The Guy', asking "A penny for the guy". The money is then used for fireworks~ (I personally haven't actually seen any of this, but I have heard of it.)
  5. Anything you can cook over a Bonfire is good to eat too~ That is if it's not too big for you to cook anything on! (Some Bonfires area /huge/) Jacket potatoes, sausages, toasted marshmallows.
  6. This is a funny tradition I've not heard of before now, in Ottery, St Mary, teams of stalwart men carry flaming, 50-pound tar barrels on their shoulders down the town’s High Street. When one man's barrel get too hot for him, another man takes over carrying it, with the team passing it amongst each other until the fire dies out and the ashes of the barrel crumble.

To roughly describe the general experience in one sentence. It'd be. Standing in a muddy field, wearing wellies and sinking into the mud, but not cold at all because of the huge bonfire that's a good three times your height, eating a toffee apple and watching the fireworks being launched with all your family/friends~<3
OfcourseI'mstayinginsideandwatchingthefireworksfrommyroomthisyear. I went to see a public firework show yesterday.

And! Here's a Nursery Rhyme~ Although I can actually never remember more than the first line. |D
Remember, remember the fifth of November,
Gunpowder treason and plot.
We see no reason
Why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!

Guy Fawkes, guy, t'was his intent
To blow up king and parliament.
Three score barrels were laid below
To prove old England's overthrow.

By god's mercy he was catch'd
With a darkened lantern and burning match.
So, holler boys, holler boys, Let the bells ring.
Holler boys, holler boys, God save the king.

And what shall we do with him?
Burn him!

There are a couple of Rhymes, actually, but this is the main one I think.
