Crufts!

Post by BakaInuNinja on Mon Mar 03, 2014 8:31 pm

I don't know why I like making these informational post things so much, but here's another one for you!
Because I like dogs and Crufts.

So, in a few days Crufts 2014 will be starting! It's the world's biggest dog show held in Birmingham in England every year.
Lasting 4 days, there are many events continuously going on all day every day, along with the trade hall, like that of an anime convention, but selling dog-related goods, and the Discover Dogs hall where there are many stalls educating about various breeds!
Various events which happen in the rings include: The best of Breed, Best of Group, Best of Show, Dog Agility, Dog Obedience, Flyball, Heelwork to Music, a couple of Dog Display Teams each day for fields such as Gundogs, Rescue Dogs, Police dogs, And many, many many more. (There are 4 rings, active from 8:30 in the morning to 5:00 in the evening all 4 days.)
And if all that isn't enough. Remember there are competitions for both Adult and Junior handlers, both National and International!
There has previously been controversy as to the health of some show dogs, (Examples like the German Shepherd, or the Basset Hound). However, this has led to a change in the judging so that only healthy dogs can be chosen.

Now! The Seven groups of dogs, the categories used in the show:
Working
Dogs historically and even currently used for tasks such as sledding, guarding, human assistance and therapy.
Pastoral
(For all you Corgi fans, this is where those guys go!)
These are breeds that typically would work with livestock and so includes many sheepdogs, mountain dogs and collies.
Terrier
Breeds originally used to hunt animals traditionally seen as vermin, such as mice, rats, rabbits and otters. They generally have small bodies able to fit down the animals' burrows to flush them out for the hunter.
Hound
Historically used in hunting, finding the targets, they are usually sight hounds or scent hounds although there is some variation from the norm.
Toy
Small breeds, historically being lapdogs, or smaller versions of larger working breeds.
Utility
This is mostly a 'Everything else' group, for breeds which don't quite fit in other groups. (Eg. Small breeds which are too large to class as a toy, or Dalmatians as they were bred to run alongside horse drawn coaches, which is of course not possible now.)
Gundog
Breeds used when bird hunting, given a variety of skills and tasks such as flushing out the birds, retrieving or pointing to those which have been shot, and those who retrieve from water.

Now for the fun bit because I'm gonna spam some videos!
Here's a great short overview of some of the goings-on.

And now here are some examples from the official Crufts Youtube of the goings on from recent years shows.
